Biography
Died 20 January 1811. Jean-François-Thérèse Chalgrin studied architecture with Giovanni Nicolò Servandoni (1695-1766), Étienne Louis Boullée (1728-1799) and Pierre Louis Moreau-Desproux (1727 or 1736-1793), and won the Prix de Rome in 1758. Returning to France in 1763, he joined the Bâtiments de la Ville de Paris. Chalgrin was elected to the Académie royale d'architecture (France) in 1770. He succeeded Charles de Wailly in the Institut de France in 1798. He is best-known as the architect of the Arc de Triomphe (1806-1836). Comment on works: Architect
