Biography
German painter, best known for his state portraits of the Belgian, English and French royal families. Although Winterhalter used no preliminary sketches on the canvas, and decided the dress and pose of the sitter, he was able to fuse formality and intimacy in his work, using bold color and contrasting sumptuous fabric against delicate flesh.
