Biography
Pieter Wouwerman was the second son of Paul Joosten Wouwerman and the younger brother of Philips, who taught him and whose style he copied. He entered the guild of St Luke in Haarlem in 1646. In 1654 he married, but perhaps did not prosper, as he then travelled. He probably spent time in Paris, views of which can be seen in the backgrounds of several of his paintings. He is also thought to have lived in Antwerp, where his son Paul was apprenticed. His works are often attributed to his brother Philips. Comment on works: Landscapes; Battles; Military.
