About Jan Baptist Weenix

1621–1659Dutch Republic

There have been varying opinions concerning when and where the artist died, due to confusion regarding a man also named Jan Wenincx who died at Doetinchem, Gelderland, sometime before 1663. However, since it cannot be proven that this Jan Wenincx was a painter, there seems little reason to dispute Houbraken's statement that Weenix moved to the Huis ter Mey, near Utrecht, three years before his premature death in 1660 or 1661. In his sister's will of November 1663 Weenix was mentioned as deceased. Comment on works: Still Life; Genre; Ruins; Marines; Landscapes; Architecture
