About Hendrick ter Brugghen

1588–1629Dutch Republic

An influential member of the group of painters called the Dutch Caravaggists. He was first exposed to the work of Caravaggio when he travelled to Italy in 1605. When he returned to the Netherlands in 1614, his work reflected his interest in Caravaggio's realism, and possessed many of the same stylistic and formal traits, including the emanation of light from a single source. He painted mostly biblical, genre, and mythological scenes, many with a restless and charged atmosphere. Comment on works: History
