About Willem de Heusch

1625–1692Dutch Republic

Painted in the style of the Dutch Italianates. In 1656 at the age of 18, he left for Italy, where he remained for several years. He was a pupil of Jan Both, whose teachings he would always retain. He returned to Holland an older man, and there he continued to paint landscapes with ruins. He was one of the most acknowledged representatives of the Dutch Italianates and preceded the arrival of the great Dutch landscapists. Comment on works: Landscapes with ruins; mythological subjects, landscapes with figures.
