Antoon Derkinderen was a student of the Koninklijke School voor Nuttige en Beeldende Kunsten in Hertogenbosch and the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam (under the direction of August Allebe). His body of work includes murals, easel paintings (mainly portraits), some etchings, and lithographs. Derkinderen's first attempt at a published book was Vondel's Gysbrecht van Aemstel. He also designed postage stamps and a banknote. When Allebe retired as director of the Rijksakademie, Derkinderen was chosen as successor.
