About Lorenzo Costa

1455–1535

Worked for the ruling Bentivoglio family in Bologna and succeeded Mantegna as court painter at Mantua in 1507. Little of his large-scale work survives. His paintings are often noted for their delicate landscapes. He was older than his contemporary, Lorenzo Mantovano Costa, and is thus sometimes called "Lorenzo Costa the elder," although they were not father and son (they may have been grandfather and grandson, although any familial relationship is uncertain). Comment on works: religious, history
