About Joachim Wtewael

1566–1638Dutch Republic

Considered one of the last Mannerist artists. The grandson of J. van Schayck, Joachim studied first with his father, Antonis Uytewael, a stained glass maker. He also studied with Joost de Beere in about 1584 and with Frans Floris. He visited Italy, spent four years with the bishop of St-Malo, Charles de Bourgneuf, and travelled around France for two years. He returned to Utrecht in 1592 and, in 1603, he married Christine van Halen. Uytewael was involved in the establishment of the painters' guild in 1611.
