Diao Guangyin (852–935), also known as Diao Guang, was a distinguished Chinese painter of the late Tang dynasty and Five Dynasties period, born in Yongjing (present-day Xi’an). A master of flower-and-bird painting, he excelled in depicting lake rocks, flowers, bamboo, cats, rabbits, sparrows, and dragons amid water, working in the tradition of the Tang-era Bian Luan school. Amid the chaos following the Huang Chao rebellion, he fled to Shu (Sichuan) during the Tianfu era (901–904) and settled in Chengdu, where he remained for more than thirty years. There he painted with unwavering diligence, never setting down his brush except in illness or extreme old age.
