**Pietro Monaco (also known as Monego or Monacho; 1707–1772)** was an Italian engraver and mosaicist active primarily in Venice. Born in Belluno and baptized on September 22, 1707, he came from a family originally from Fusine in Valzoldana; his father was a carpenter named Jacopo. He moved to Venice as a child and was introduced to the arts by his uncle Tommaso Monaco, under whom he trained as an apprentice.)
Monaco established himself as a skilled reproductive etcher and engraver, producing detailed prints after works by both historical and contemporary Venetian masters. His most celebrated project was the *Raccolta di centododici stampe di pitture della storia sacra* (Collection of 112 Prints of Paintings of Sacred History), begun around 1739 and issued in a definitive edition in 1763. This ambitious series reproduced biblical scenes after artists including Giovanni Battista Piazzetta, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, Sebastiano Ricci, and others, with an innovative chronological arrangement of the prints themselves. He also created portraits, book illustrations, and frontispieces, often collaborating with painters such as Giovanni Battista Tiepolo and Pietro Antonio Novelli.)
In addition to printmaking, Monaco worked as a mosaicist. He was accepted into the workshop at St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice in 1750, where he restored mosaics (including the *Prophet Daniel*) and created new panels, such as one after a Tiepolo design. He later restored mosaics at Torcello Cathedral and produced works for churches in Murano and elsewhere. Monaco ran his own workshop in Venice from the late 1730s and was also active as an art dealer.)
Monaco died in Venice on June 9, 1772, after a two-month illness. His prints continued to circulate in posthumous editions, helping preserve and disseminate images of Venetian painting for later generations. Though his name is sometimes linked in collections to earlier Baroque figures like Giovanni Antonio Fumiani (whose works he reproduced), Monaco’s own legacy lies in his meticulous reproductive engravings and contributions to Venetian mosaic restoration during the 18th century.
