Biography

Jan de Beer is regarded as one of the central figures in Antwerp Mannerism. He was possibly born in Antwerp where was an apprentice to to the painter Gillis van Everen. Although a drawing in the British Museum is the only fully signed work by de Beer, it is possible to extrapolate from it and attribute other works to him with considerable confidence; the resulting oeuvre includes about two dozen works. Jan was the parent of Aert de Beer. Comment on works: religious
