Nabwami Mary Assumpta, professionally known as Ganda or ganda_the_artist, is a contemporary Ugandan painter and illustrator based in Kampala. She is recognized for her vibrant depictions of African women and has developed a distinctive approach that merges realistic portraiture with semi-abstract, multi-colored backgrounds—a technique she has named the “Ganda style.”
Assumpta studied at Makerere University’s School of Art (now part of the Margaret Trowell School of Industrial and Fine Arts), where she honed her skills in painting and illustration. She has participated in group exhibitions in Uganda, including the 2024 “Women Artists Bare Emotions” show, where she presented five works: *Birds Orchestra*, *Home Sweet Home*, *Confining in a Friend*, *Following Her Footsteps*, and *Little Birds Concert*. Her practice emphasizes emotional expression and cultural identity through colorful, layered compositions.
While details of her early life remain limited in public records, her emergence as a professional artist has been marked by active engagement in Kampala’s art scene, including studio collaborations and social-media presence under @ganda_the_artist. Her work contributes to the growing visibility of Ugandan women artists exploring themes of femininity, community, and heritage.
Ganda’s signature style and consistent exhibition activity position her as an emerging voice in East African contemporary art, helping to bridge traditional motifs with modern expressive techniques for both local and international audiences.
