Henry Moore (1898–1986) was one of the most celebrated and influential sculptors of the twentieth century, whose monumental abstract forms — reclining figures, mother and child groupings, and dramatic void-pierced masses — reshaped the landscape of modern sculpture and brought his work to audiences across the globe. Born in Castleford, Yorkshire, the son of a coal miner, Moore won a scholarship to the Leeds School of Art and subsequently studied at the Royal College of Art in London, where he immersed himself in the archaic and non-Western sculptural traditions he encountered at the British Museum. The ancient Mexican, African, and pre-Columbian objects he studied there proved a decisive counterweight to the classical European tradition and pointed him toward the expressive primitivism that would characterize his mature work.
Moore's early sculptures in wood and stone reflect his commitment to direct carving and to what he called "truth to materials" — the idea that a sculptor should work in sympathy with the natural properties of stone or wood rather than imposing an alien form upon it. Through the 1930s he developed his signature idiom of biomorphic abstraction, finding in the human figure — particularly the reclining female form — an endlessly renewable source of formal invention. During the Second World War, his drawings of Londoners sheltering in Underground stations brought him widespread public recognition and demonstrated a gift for sympathetic figuration alongside his more abstract work.
The postwar decades saw Moore achieve an international stature unmatched by any other British artist of his generation. Large-scale bronzes were commissioned for major public spaces from Lincoln Center in New York to the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, and retrospectives toured the world's leading museums. His studio and home at Perry Green in Hertfordshire became the site of the Henry Moore Foundation, established in 1977 to preserve his legacy and support the arts.
Moore's legacy is that of an artist who succeeded in making abstract sculpture speak to broad human experience, connecting the formal discoveries of modernism to timeless themes of shelter, fertility, and the relationship between the human body and the natural world.
