1724–1785
Jan Stolker (1724–1785) was a Dutch printmaker, painter, art dealer, and collector who created an invaluable visual archive of Dutch, Flemish, and German artists through his portrait series. Born on July 1, 1724, in Amsterdam, Stolker received his artistic training from Jan Maurits Quinkhard, a prominent portrait painter, which established his foundation in portraiture that would define his career. His diverse activities encompassed painting, etching, mezzotint engraving, publishing, and art dealing, making him a multifaceted figure in the 18th-century Dutch art world. Stolker became a member of the Confrerie Pictura in The Hague and the Rotterdam Guild of Saint Luke, indicating his professional standing and active participation in artistic organizations. He is particularly known for creating portraits and copies of 17th-century Dutch Golden Age masters, helping preserve and disseminate knowledge of earlier Dutch artistic achievements. His most significant contribution to art history was a monumental series of 155 portraits depicting Dutch, Flemish, and German artists, documented by the RKD (Netherlands Institute for Art History). This comprehensive project created an essential visual record of artistic personalities, preserving the likenesses of artists who might otherwise remain unknown to posterity. As an art collector and bibliophile, Stolker participated in the vibrant Amsterdam art market, dealing in paintings while building his own collection. His activities as both creator and curator of art positioned him at the intersection of artistic production and commerce. Stolker's works are preserved in major institutions including the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. He died in Rotterdam on June 10, 1785, having created a lasting legacy through his portrait series that continues to serve art historians studying Dutch and Flemish artistic traditions.
