Occupations
Petrus van den Eynde (23 October 1787 – 5 April 1840) was a Dutch lithographer, draftsman, and painter best known for his portrait work. Born in Haarlem, he spent much of his professional life as a captain in the infantry while pursuing art as an amateur. He was active in both Ghent and his native Haarlem from 1802 until his death in 1840.
Van den Eynde produced a series of carefully observed portraits that capture the likenesses of notable figures from his era. Among his documented works are the *Portrait of Jan Nieuwenhuizen* (1827), *Portrait of the Actor Emerij* (1829), *Portrait of Adriaan Pietersz. Loosjes* (1830), and *Portrait of Adrianus Frans Baron Meijer* (1833). These pieces demonstrate his skill in lithography and drawing, mediums that allowed him to create precise, reproducible images while balancing his military duties.
Although his artistic output remained secondary to his army career, van den Eynde contributed to the visual record of early nineteenth-century Dutch society through his portraits. His works continue to appear in museum collections, preserving the faces and status of actors, writers, and civic leaders of his time. Today he is remembered as a capable amateur artist whose military background lent a disciplined eye to his depictions of contemporaries.
