Biography

Salvatore Castiglione (1620–1676) was an Italian Baroque painter born in Genoa who specialized in landscapes and pastoral subjects. Born on April 21, 1620, Salvatore was both the brother and pupil of the more famous Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, one of the leading figures of the Genoese Baroque. Working in his brother's shadow, Salvatore developed sufficient skill that his paintings were sometimes confused with those of Giovanni Benedetto, and modern scholars continue to debate attributions between the two brothers and Giovanni Benedetto's son Francesco. Salvatore traveled to Rome with his brother, where Giovanni Benedetto joined the Accademia di San Luca, exposing Salvatore to the broader artistic currents of Baroque Rome. Beyond his paintings, Salvatore also produced at least one highly finished etching, the 'Resurrection of Lazarus' (1645), demonstrating his technical versatility. His career exemplifies the common pattern in early modern artistic families, where multiple family members practiced painting, often making attribution challenging for later scholars.

Training and Early Career in Genoa

(1620–1640s)

Born on April 21, 1620, in Genoa, Salvatore Castiglione grew up in an artistic household. His older brother Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione (1609–1664) was already establishing himself as one of Genoa's leading painters.

Salvatore trained as a pupil of his brother, learning the family specialization in landscapes and pastoral subjects populated with animals. This training grounded him in the Genoese Baroque tradition while also exposing him to the influence of Flemish landscape painters whose works were collected in Genoa.

Roman Period and Mature Work

(1640s–1676)

Salvatore traveled to Rome with his brother Giovanni Benedetto, where the elder Castiglione joined the prestigious Accademia di San Luca. This Roman sojourn exposed Salvatore to the grand Baroque tradition of Rome and provided opportunities to study both classical antiquity and contemporary Roman painting.

In 1645, Salvatore created a highly finished etching representing the 'Resurrection of Lazarus,' demonstrating his technical capability in printmaking as well as painting.

Throughout his career, Salvatore painted landscapes and pastoral subjects in a style closely related to his brother's work. Indeed, many paintings attributed to Giovanni Benedetto may actually be copies after him or perhaps originals by either Salvatore or Giovanni Benedetto's son Francesco, indicating that Salvatore's skill was sufficient to create works virtually indistinguishable from his more famous brother's.

Salvatore Castiglione died in 1676, having established himself as a capable practitioner of the Genoese Baroque landscape tradition, even if his work remained somewhat overshadowed by his brother's greater fame.
