Biography
Su shi and his circle were responsible for the development of what became known as literati painting. He took the civil service examination in 1057. He was a well-known essayist and came into conflict with conservatives and reformers as a result of his ideas. He was exiled in 1080, and spent his time writing poetry which established his reputation as a literary figure. Upon his return from exile he served at court rising to the level of President of the Board of Rites. He was exiled twice more in 1094 and 1097.
