1623–1677
Wallerant Vaillant (1623-1677) was a French-born Dutch Golden Age painter and printmaker who pioneered the mezzotint technique in printmaking. Born in Lille on May 30, 1623, he died in Amsterdam on August 28, 1677, leaving behind a significant legacy as both a portraitist and innovator in graphic arts. Vaillant holds a distinguished place in art history as one of the first professional artists to master and popularize the mezzotint technique. Working during the height of the Dutch Golden Age, he was chiefly recognized as a skilled portraitist whose work bridged Franco-Flemish and Dutch artistic traditions. The pivotal moment in his career came in 1658 when he met Prince Rupert of the Rhine in Frankfurt. Working closely with Prince Rupert, Vaillant helped refine the newly invented mezzotint technique, transforming it into a sophisticated artistic medium. He produced over 200 high-quality mezzotints from the mid-1660s until his death.
