Art Historical Context

This delicate panel forms the inner left wing of a triptych painted around 1480–1485 by the Bruges Master of the Legend of Saint Ursula. It shows a devout donor kneeling with his two young sons, presented to the viewer by Saint John the Evangelist. Such donor portraits were common in Flemish altarpieces, allowing families to express their piety while securing a visual presence in the church where the triptych would have stood.
