About this artwork
This January 1881 cover of the popular journal Harperâs Weekly represents a visit by Native American leaders to Washington, D.C. During the late nineteenth century, these occasions for group activism were often in the news. They were diplomatic responses to white colonizersâ usurpation of Native lands west of the Mississippi River and to the Indian Wars, which violently displaced Native Americans onto reservations.
