Deze serie bevat 24 prenten in klein formaat, die een vereenvoudiging zijn van eerder uitgegeven prenten in groot formaat. In 1840 werden de stoffelijke resten van Napoleon op initiatief van Adolphe Thiers en koning Louis-Philippe van Sint-Helena overgebracht naar Parijs (Le retour des cendres). De tekening voor de steendruk is naar het leven gemaakt ('dessiné d'après nature').

In 1840, France witnessed a poignant national event known as *Le Retour des Cendres* ("The Return of the Ashes"), the remains of Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte were repatriated from exile on Saint Helena to Paris.
