De Franse koopman Jean Calas uit Toulouse werd in 1761 valselijk beschuldigd van moord op Marc Antoine, zijn 30-jarige zoon. Calas (calvinist) zou zijn zoon hebben omgebracht omdat deze zich tot het katholicisme wilde bekeren. In maart 1762 werd Calas ter dood gebracht.
