This 1738 etching by Louis Fabritius Dubourg presents an elegant allegory in which the personification of Painting is crowned by Eternity. The compact composition, measuring just 215 by 157 millimetres, uses the fine, fluid lines characteristic of the etching medium to convey a sense timeless elevation. Dubourg, active in the Netherlands during the early eighteenth century, often explored such symbolic themes that celebrated the enduring value of artistic creation.
