Wu Xizai's 'Apricot' (19th century) represents refined Chinese literati painting tradition on this folding fan mounted as album leaf. Wu Xizai (1799-1870), philologist and student of Bao Shichen, brought aesthetic preference for firm sustained brushwork into seal carving and painting as representative artist of Stele School calligraphy. According to the artist's inscription, Wu saw a handscroll by Chen Hongshou (1599-1652) depicting blossoming apricots, imitated it, and dedicated it to Zihong fo...
