Anton Kothgasser, born on January 9, 1769, in Vienna, emerged as one of Austria's foremost porcelain and glass painters during the Biedermeier era. Orphaned early by his father Josef's death in 1775, he received initial artistic training from his relative Jakob Petter, a landscape painter at the Viennese Porcelain Manufactory.
