About François-Auguste Biard

1788–1882France

Began his studies at the École des Beaux-Arts , in Lyon with Pierre-Henri Révoil (1776-1842). In 1824, he moved to Paris. In 1827, he travelled to Spain, Greece, Syria and Egypt as a professor of drawing of the Navy, contributing to publications devoted to geographical and maritime issues. On his return, he became the official portrait painter to the French court.During the 1830s, he travelled throughout England, Scotland, Spain and Switzerland, recording peoples and customs and collecting objects of anthropological interest.
