In een landschap tussen bomen geeft een vrouw liggend op een doek haar kind de borst, in de linkerhand houdt zij een kruis. Links kijkt een ander kind toe. In de wolken staat een triomfwagen waarin een man die de vrouw een lauwerkrans en een palmtak aanreikt. De voorstelling is geïnterpreteerd als Caritas en als Venus die Amor de borst geeft.

Son of a laborer who transported wood. He was called Guercino (squinter), because he was cross-eyed or had a squint in his right eye. Reputedly self-taught early, then an apprentice in the shop of Benedetto Gennari. Patrons included the papal legate at Ferrara and the Archbishop of Bologna.
