Art Historical Context

This exquisite cylinder seal from the Neo-Assyrian period ( 9th–8th century BCE) captures a dynamic mythological contest scene, featuring griffins—fierce, lion-bodied creatures with eagle wings—and human figures locked in combat. Carved from neutral chalcedony, a durable variety of quartz prized for its fine grain and ability to hold intricate details, the seal measures just 15/16 inch high and 9/16 inch in diameter. Rolled across soft clay, it would imprint a continuous frieze, serving as a signature for authenticating documents, goods, or royal decrees in ancient Assyria. Cylinder seals like this one were cornerstones of Mesopotamian bureaucracy and artistry, evolving from earlier traditions into highly sophisticated tools by the Neo-Assyrian era. The deeply incised lines reveal masterful stone-carving techniques, where artists exploited the stone's translucency and hardness to depict symbolic struggles between heroic humans and mythical beasts. Griffins, guardians of the divine, often symbolized protection or chaos in Assyrian lore, underscoring the culture's fascination with cosmic order amid imperial expansion. Housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Ancient Near Eastern Art department (gift of Nanette B. Kelekian, 1999), this tiny artifact offers a window into Assyria's rich mythological world, blending daily utility with profound spiritual narratives.
