About Thérèse Schwartze

1851–1918Kingdom of the Netherlands

As a young adult, Schwartze was trained as a portrait painter by her father, Johann Georg Schwartze. After his death, she continued to paint, and her style was influenced by annual trips to the Paris Salon. Although it was quite rare for a female painter in her time to be internationally recognized, Schwartze developed an international reputation by participating in exhibitions in Germany, Spain, and the United States. Although she received critcism following her solo exhibition in Amsterdam in 1890, she continued to receive numerous commissions from wealthy patrons. Comment on works: portrait; graphic; printmaker
