Art Historical Context

Pietro Sante Bartoli created this delicate etching, titled 5/14, during the height of the Baroque era. Active in Rome from the mid-17th century until his death in 1700, Bartoli specialized in documenting ancient Roman antiquities through print. His helped preserve and share knowledge of classical sculpture, architecture, and frescoes at a time when many original monuments were deteriorating or inaccessible to most viewers. Pietro Santi Bartoli, born in Perugia in 1635, emerged as a pivotal figure in the Roman antiquarian revival of the late seventeenth century.
