Dated around 1600–1650, this piece likely emerged from his Florentine studio, renowned for producing intricate small-scale bronzes for elite collectors under Medici patronage. Mannerism, Giambologna's signature style, emphasized elongated forms, twisting poses, and multi-viewpoint compositions that invite viewers to circle the work, capturing drama from every angle. Here, the myth of Hercules battling the centaur Nessus (or variant Eurytion) unfolds: the hero defends his wife Deianira from the abductor's grasp, embodying classical themes of heroism and brute strength. The bearded Hercules dominates a rocky base, straddling the collapsing centaur. With his left hand gripping the foe's averted head and his right raised in a club-wielding strike, Hercules exudes power. The centaur, sagging on forelegs, twists sideways— one hand clawing free, the other pushing against Hercules' chest—his distorted, open-mouthed face conveying agony and defiance. Cast in bronze with a lacquer patina for a rich, enduring sheen, the 52 cm tall figure (36.5 × 31 cm base, 12.4 kg) showcases lost-wax techniques for fine anatomical detail and tension-filled anatomy.
