Art Historical Context

This etching, created in 1873 by Adolphe Martial Potémont (known as Martial) after a design associated with Eugène Delacroix and printed by A. Beillet, offers a glimpse into the private world of the Comte de Mornay. The image captures a richly furnished interior complete with chairs and beds, rendered through the precise lines and tonal subtleties of the etching medium. At just over nine inches tall, the plate demonstrates how 19th-century printmakers could translate painted or drawn interiors into accessible works on paper. The subject connects directly to Delacroix’s circle. Comte de Mornay served as a diplomat and patron; Delacroix accompanied him on the important 1832 mission to Morocco that inspired many of the artist’s exotic and intimate scenes. By reproducing the count’s apartment decades later, Martial’s etching preserves the atmosphere of a space tied to Romantic-era cultural exchange and artistic inspiration. As a print in the Metropolitan Museum’s Drawings and Prints collection, this work highlights etching’s role in disseminating images of historic interiors to wider audiences. Its modest scale and detailed observation invite viewers to imagine the daily surroundings of a figure central to one of France’s greatest painters.
