Art Historical Context

This hanging scroll, titled *Landscape*, was created by the Chinese artist Zhao Zuo during the Qing dynasty (1644–1911). Executed in ink on silk, the vertical format typical of hanging scrolls allows the composition to unfold gradually from misty peaks at the to detailed terrain below, inviting viewers to journey through the scene as if traveling through nature itself. Such works were traditionally displayed in scholars’ studios or temples, where they served as focal points for contemplation. In Chinese tradition, landscape paintings—known as *shanshui* or “mountain-water” pictures—embody more than scenic views; they express philosophical ideals of harmony between humanity and the natural world. Zhao Zuo’s work continues this long-standing practice, using subtle ink washes and layered brushwork to suggest vast distances and atmospheric depth. The presence of towering mountains reflects the Qing era’s reverence for earlier painting conventions while adapting them to contemporary tastes. Acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1913 through the John Stewart Kennedy Fund, the scroll measures approximately 58 by 26 inches, making it an intimate yet monumental example of Chinese landscape art that continues to inspire appreciation for nature’s quiet grandeur.

**Zhao Zuo** (Chinese: 赵左; c. 1570–after 1633) was a noted Ming dynasty painter from Huating (present-day Songjiang, Shanghai). His style name was Wendu.
