Art Historical Context

Gilles Neyts created this delicate etching, *Landscape with Tobias and the Angel*, during the first half of the seventeenth century. Working in the Flemish tradition, Neyts specialized in small-scale landscape prints that combined natural scenery with biblical narratives. The scene depicts the young Tobias, guided by the archangel Raphael, a story drawn from the Book of Tobit that was popular in Northern European art for its themes of protection and divine companionship. Etching on laid paper allowed Neyts to achieve fine, expressive lines that capture the textures of trees, rocks, and water....
