Maria met kind en H. Barbara en H. Catharina
Jan Gossart, na 1511 - 1516
About this artwork
Behold this exquisite drawing by Jan Gossart, a pioneering Flemish artist of the Northern Renaissance (c 1478–1532), titled *Maria met kind en H. Barbara en H. Catharina* (Mary with Child and Saints Barbara and Catherine). Created between 1511 and 1516 on light gray paper measuring 425 × 310 mm, it captures a tender devotional scene: the Virgin Mary cradling the Christ Child, accompanied by the scholarly St. Catherine and the tower-guarded St. Barbara. Such compositions were popular in early 16th-century Northern Europe, blending piety with humanism during the Renaissance's spread from Italy. Gossart, also known as Jan Mabuse, was instrumental in importing Italian Renaissance techniques to the Low Countries after his transformative trip to Rome in 1508–09. Here, he employs black chalk (*zwart krijt*) on prepared gray paper, masterfully exploiting chiaroscuro—deep shadows and subtle highlights—to achieve volume and emotional depth. This monochromatic medium allowed artists like Gossart to refine compositions for paintings or altarpieces, showcasing his shift toward classical anatomy and perspective. As a rare surviving study, this work highlights Gossart's innovative draftsmanship, bridging Gothic traditions with emerging Mannerism. Visitors, imagine it pinned in his Antwerp studio, guiding the creation of grand panels— a window into the creative alchemy of Renaissance genius.
