Art Historical Context
Joos van Winghe, active in the Netherlands and Germany at the turn of the seventeenth century, designed this composition to portray the crowded nocturnal gatherings that mixed masked entertainment with feasting and flirtation. The scene circulated widely through prints, and this painted version adapts the original design with a changed interior setting while retaining the same cast of masked comedians, musicians, and revelers. The painting arranges its figures so that the long table of diners and backgammon players sits calmly against the far wall, while the foreground erupts with tumbling bodies, spilled wine, and a masked man brandishing a pitchfork. Three small framed pictures hang above the table; their subjects of temptation and moral lapse quietly frame the larger party without interrupting its flow. Painted in oil on panel between 1580 and 1630, the work now hangs in the Rijksmuseum. Look at the young woman being led forward by the older figure near the doorway: the slight turn of her head and the older woman’s grip on her wrist reward a closer look for the way they quietly shift the tone of the surrounding merriment.
