About Alexandre François Desportes

1661–1743France

Known for his paintings of dogs, game, and emblems of the chase. Although he continued the lavish Flemish tradition, he was among the first 18th-century artists to paint landscape studies from nature, and for this reason he was considered eccentric. John III of Poland and Louis XIV of France were patrons. Comment on works: Portraits; Hunting scenes; Animals; Still life
