About Giovanni Battista Crespi ("Il Cerano")

1575–1632

Although earlier scholars suggested a birthdate of 1565-1570, Cerano's birthdate of ca. 1575 is based on documents stating his age in a census of 1610 and at time of death in 1632. His first securely date painting is from 1594 in Cerano. Based on his adopted nickname, his birthplace was probably Cerano, although he may have been born in Milan or Busto Arsizio. Cerano was a leading artist in Milan. His style was transitional, combining Mannerist elegance and color with Baroque naturalistic detail. His works are often mystical and complex. He was the head of the painting section of the Accademia Ambrosiana and in charge of the sculptural decoration of Milan Cathedral. Comment on works: Religious; History
