Frans van Mieris the Elder, a leading figure of the Dutch Golden Age, created this intimate portrait in the 17th century. Active in Leiden, he belonged to the fijnschilders (“fine painters”), a group renowned for their meticulous attention to detail and luminous effects. Though best known for his small-scale genre scenes and portraits in oil, van Mieris also produced sensitive drawings that reveal the same precision and psychological insight.
