This striking portrait by Maarten van Heemskerck captures Johannes Colmannus, a Dutch scholar and cleric who lived from 1471 to 1538. Painted in oil on panel around 1538–1540, shortly after the sitter’s death, the work measures 77.6 by 59.4 centimeters and exemplifies the refined portraiture of the Northern Renaissance. Heemskerck, active in Haarlem and deeply influenced by Italian art, brought a sense of dignified realism to his subjects, blending meticulous detail with a subtle psychological presence.
