Art Historical Context

This exquisite Stirrup Spout Bottle Suckling Puma, by an unknown Chimú artist between the 12th and 15th centuries, exemplifies masterful ceramics of Peru's north coast. Belonging to the Chimú culture—a sophisticated pre-Inca society known for its vast empire, intricate irrigation systems, and urban centers like Chan Chan—this vessel measures about 10 9/16 inches tall. The distinctive stirrup spout, a hallmark of Andean pottery traditions inherited from earlier Moche culture, allowed for pouring liquids like chicha (fermented corn beer) without spilling, blending practicality with artistry. The bottle's surface features a modeled and slip-painted suckling puma, a powerful feline motif central to Chimú iconography. Pumas symbolized strength, ferocity, and perhaps fertility through the nursing scene, reflecting the culture's deep animistic worldview where animals embodied supernatural forces. Chimú potters achieved their signature glossy black or bichrome finishes through reduction firing and fine clay work, showcasing technical prowess in a medium vital for rituals, trade, and daily life. Housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas department as part of The Michael C. Rockefeller Memorial Collection, this piece invites us to ponder the Chimú's reverence for nature's cycles, bridging the functional and the sacred in ancient American art.
