Crescenzio Onofri’s “Studie van twee boomgroepen” is a sensitive 17th-century study of two clusters of trees rendered in black chalk on paper. Measuring roughly 33 by 39 centimeters, the sheet reveals Onofri’s careful attention to the varied textures of foliage, trunks, and light filtering through branches. Active during the Baroque period, Onofri was known for landscape paintings and drawings that combined Italian compositional traditions with a growing interest in direct observation of nature. Such tree studies were essential tools for artists of the time. They allowed painters to rehearse the rhythms and masses of vegetation before incorporating them into larger canvases or frescoes. The soft, velvety line of black chalk enabled subtle gradations of tone, giving the drawing both clarity and atmospheric depth.
