François-Nicolas Chifflart was born on March 21, 1825, in Saint-Omer, France, to Antoine-Omer Chifflart, a skilled locksmith, carver, and engraver who introduced his son to metal engraving while working for tobacco pipe manufacturer Louis Fiolet.
