This title page from 1616 introduces *Teatro delle Nobili et Virtuose Donne* (Theater of Noble and Virtuous Women), a book celebrating accomplished women through ornamental designs. Created by Isabella Catanea Parasole, a skilled female artist known for pattern books, in collaboration with Mauritizio Bona, the work combines woodcut and engraving techniques. These methods allowed for crisp, repeatable motifs that were ideal for instructional volumes on lace, embroidery, and decorative arts. Measuring just 7½ by 10⅞ inches, the page features portraits, playful putti, and heraldic coats of arms that evoke themes of nobility and feminine virtue. In the early seventeenth century, such publications served both practical and aspirational purposes, guiding noblewomen in refined needlework while honoring their social roles. The Metropolitan Museum’s impression, acquired in 1919, preserves this blend of artistry and cultural commentary. As a frontispiece, it reflects the growing visibility of women in print culture during the Baroque era, offering modern viewers a window into how art, gender, and craftsmanship intersected in Renaissance and early modern Europe.
