Art Historical Context

This delicate silk textile sample, created around 1900 by the French firm J. Claude Frères & Co., offers a charming glimpse into the refined world of early twentieth-century textile design. Produced in Lyon, a historic center of silk weaving, the small panel (just over five by eleven inches) showcases the company’s expertise in creating intricate woven patterns. Its floral motifs reflect the period’s widespread fascination with nature-inspired ornament, bridging late Victorian tastes and the emerging Art Nouveau style. Woven entirely in silk, the sample highlights the luxurious sheen and fine detail achievable through traditional Jacquard loom techniques. Such pieces were typically made as design proposals for fashion or furnishing fabrics, allowing clients to appreciate color, texture, and pattern on a manageable scale. Acquired by the Metropolitan Museum in 1908 through the Rogers Fund, it now resides in the Department of Modern and Contemporary Art, where it represents the transition from nineteenth-century industrial craftsmanship to the modern era’s emphasis on innovative design.
