The first pupil of Rembrandt, known for his neat and precise style, fastidiousness, incredibly smooth surfaces and paintings of domestic interiors. He sometimes used a magnifying glass; a founder of the Guild of St Luke at Leiden (1648). Comment on works: Genre; Portraits
