Canaletto’s *Warwick Castle* (1748) captures one of England’s most celebrated medieval strongholds from across the River Avon, its towers and battlements reflected in calm water. Painted during the Venetian master’s extended stay in Britain (1746–55), the canvas belongs to a series of English “views” he created for local patrons eager to own souvenirs of their own landscapes in the same sparkling style that had made him famous in Venice. Working in oil on a modestly scaled canvas, Canaletto employs his signature precision of perspective and luminous atmospheric effects to unite architecture, river, and sky. Small figures fishing from the bank and crossing the bridge animate the scene without disturbing its serene order, inviting viewers to imagine both the daily life of the estate and the picturesque beauty of the English countryside. Acquired by the Metropolitan Museum through the bequest of Mrs. Charles Wrightsman, the painting exemplifies Canaletto’s rare ability to translate the grandeur of historic sites into intimate, light-filled compositions that continue to delight visitors centuries later.
