In de winter van 1900 verblijft Toulouse-Lautrec in Bordeaux. Daar komt de kunstenaar in contact met de kunsthandelaar Imberti, een groot bewonderaar van de Impressionisten. De kunsthandelaar regelt een atelier en Toulouse-Lautrec vervaardigt in Bordeaux verschillende portretten maar ook een tekening als ontwerp voor het affiche Au Bal des Etudiants (zie http://www.toulouselautrec.free.fr/affiches5.htm).
