About Prospero Fontana

1512–1597

A pupil of Innocenzio da Imola, Prospero Fontana travelled to Rome, where he was employed by Pope Julius III, and was later engaged by Francesco Primaticcio, who was working at Fontainebleau at the time. From Fontainebleau he went to Genoa, where he worked for the Doria gallery. On returning to his native city he became the master of Lodovico, Annibale and Agostino Carracci, Dionysius Calvaert, Tiarini and Achille Calici, and was several times director of the guild of painters.
